Gambling and addictions–an
Asian perspective–coming to Clark's Mental Health Mondays series

Bounsang Khamkeo grew up in Laos but left at the age of 17 to study
in France. Thirteen years later, in 1973, he returned to his
homeland and was imprisoned for seven years where he struggled to
stay alive and keep sane in spite of harsh physical privation and
psychological abuse.
Khamkeo is also a human rights advocate who frequently speaks to
students in political science, history, and psychology programs as
well as residents who are pursuing psychiatry studies.
Bounsang
Khamkeo,
a behavioral health counselor at the OHSU Avel Gordly Center for
Healing, will be discussing gambling and addictions from an Asian
perspective from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, in the Penguin
Student Lounge, Penguin Union Building, 1933 Fort Vancouver Way,
Vancouver. Maps and parking directions are available at
www.clark.edu/maps.
Two additional “Mental Health Mondays”
events will be held in November. On Nov. 23,
Kathleen Waldron,
M.Ed., LPC, NCC, will discuss eating disorders. Waldron has more
than 20 years of community college experience.
On Nov. 30,
Judy VanPatten,
LMHC, will focus on “Coping with the Holidays.” VanPatten is a
professor at Clark College.
The “Mental Health Mondays” sessions are
sponsored by the Clark College Counseling Center. For additional

Open house to gather input
on future of rural lands Nov. 10
An
open house dealing with rural lands will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday,
Nov. 10, at the Dollars Corner fire station, 21609 N.E. 72 Avenue.
The Board of Clark County Commissioners convened a rural lands task
force in June 2009 to create recommendations to the board on the
following specific issues: rural center economic development
opportunities, maintenance of farming and forestry operations, rural
economic development opportunities, rural areas that are next to
develop (future urban reserve areas), and rural areas where natural
landscapes dominate over the built environment.
The discussions so far have been about the potential for increasing
densities and economic opportunities in rural centers, how best to
preserve agricultural activities, and the county’s forest and mining
policies. The purpose of the open house is to ask the public for
ideas on these and any other topics affecting rural areas in the
county.
